Three questions before you resign

What are you leaving, what are you going towards, and what would make you stay? Answer all three on paper before you hand in a letter.

Most people who come to me ready to resign are right to go. A few are leaving the wrong thing. Before you write the letter, answer these three on paper.

What, exactly, are you leaving?

Write the list. Be specific: “the Tuesday planning meeting”, “reporting to two people”, “no time to think”. You will often find two or three items doing most of the damage.

What are you going towards?

“Anything else” is a reason to leave, not a direction. If you cannot name the next thing yet, give yourself a deadline to find out and keep your income while you look.

What would make you stay?

Ask for it. A changed role, a different manager, four days a week. If the answer is no, you have lost nothing and you leave with a clear conscience.
